March is late season: peak whale activity around the Peninsula, fiery sunrises and sunsets returned to the sky, and young fur seals playing at landing sites. Snow is worn and colonies muddier — but fares are the lowest of the summer and ships noticeably emptier.

Temperatures slide back towards freezing and weather windows tighten. For whale watchers and photographers chasing light (and deals), it is arguably the smartest month to sail.
