Aurora Expedition marks three-and-a-half decades of firsts, while celebrating the people and values that continue to shape its future

Aurora Expeditions

Aurora Expeditions is marking its 35th anniversary, tracing its history from a small Sydney-based operator founded in 1991 by Greg and Margaret Mortimer to a global expedition company now running 73 itineraries across seven continents and 26 countries. The release recounts milestones such as early Antarctic voyages, ice camping and kayaking, Arctic expeditions from 1997, and diving and snorkelling additions, alongside the development of its fleet featuring the X-BOW-equipped ships Greg Mortimer, Sylvia Earle and Douglas Mawson.

For polar travellers, the announcement highlights the company's long involvement in Antarctic and Arctic expedition cruising, its three purpose-built small ships used for these regions, and sustainability initiatives including B Corporation certification and an Ocean Regeneration programme launched in 2025. The release includes reflections from founders, past passengers and company leadership, and accompanies a video marking the anniversary, but announces no new itineraries, ships or offers beyond this retrospective.

Summaries are written by Antarctica Unlocked from the operators' published releases. The original release, and its wording, belongs to the operator.
