Oceanwide Expeditions Announces Two Purpose-Built Eco-Sail Expedition Vessels to be Added to Their Fleet From 2029

Oceanwide Expeditions

Oceanwide Expeditions has signed a Letter of Intent to build two new eco-sail expedition vessels, each with a capacity of 146 passengers. The ships will use a hybrid sail propulsion system to cut fuel use and emissions, and are based on an updated version of the company's existing Hondius-class design. The first vessel is planned for launch in 2029, with a second following in 2030; both are intended for polar operations in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Commercialization and bookings are expected to open in early 2027, with further details on names, shipyards and design features to be announced later. The move follows Oceanwide's earlier introduction of the Hondius, the first Polar Class 6 expedition ship, and reflects ongoing investment in sustainability upgrades across its fleet. Travellers can expect future small-ship polar itineraries with reduced environmental impact once the vessels enter service.
